Swedish-born opera soprano Jenny Lind, "the Swedish Nightingale", toured the US at the behest of P T Barnum, where he made her so famous (her fame dubbed "Lind Mania") that tickets to her shows were sold by auction, grossing records amounts. Lind, a philanthropist, insisted Barnum make some tickets available at reasonable prices, and donated most of her earnings to local and Swedish charities. (Wikipedia).
