Louys (1870-1925) was a French poet and novelist. Born in Ghent, he moved to Paris where, in 1891, he founded a review called 'Le Conque' to which many of the most famous French authors of the day contributed. In this journal he printed his first poems, many of which later appeared in 'Astarte' (1891). His lyrics, based on the Greek form which he so much admired, are masterpieces of style. In 1896, this novel was published to great success by Librairie Borel. (See Larousse, Dict. of Writers). Our copy was first published in 1902.
