THE ENGLISH YEAR

England: Published by the author, 1957. ,12mo,,In original printed stiff card covers, stapled at joints,The Author's Note comments: 'The twelve 'interwoven' sonnets in this collection were written within the twelve months of 1942. When begun, no definite outline was in mind; but there came a desire to avoid octet and sestet [sic], because to the author's idea the usual sonnet-form would make for monotony and would add nothing to charm. Like our English year, so is each month's item different, in all but one instance, from others. The sonnets thereafter seemed to 'compose' themselves.' Several typos in the text are corrected by hand. Laid in loose is a small folded piece of paper on which is written: 'Prof. Wm Watson / one of his finest sonnets / 'night on Curbar (?) Edge'' - then follows the twelve neatly written lines of poetry. This little booklet shows age-toning to covers, but is otherwise in very good condition. Item #9900043581

'The following sonnets appeared in a Kemsley newspaper in World War II in aid of Lady Kemsley's fund.' Unpaginated - 15 pages.
